Cashmere Comes from Goats?

Yes, that sought after, super soft, ultra luxurious fibre we call cashmere comes from a goat. At Grimross Farm, we have a small but productive herd of cashmere goats proudly producing Canadian cashmere. While all goats, with the exception of angora goats (who give us mohair), produce cashmere, only those selectively bred and tested to have the finest quality of undercoat qualify as cashmere.

Each year, between December and March, we hand comb between 15 and 20 goats for that incredibly soft and scrumptious fibre we call cashmere. Each goat produces on average between 2 and 7 ounces per year…not much! Over the winter months we painstakingly remove all of the guard hairs by hand, and slowly hand card this amazing fibre so that it’s ready to spin. We spin some, and sell the rest as raw fibre for anyone interested in working with it. It’s amazing blended with your favourite wool, or use it on it’s own for shawls, hand warmers, touques, edging etc. The sky’s the limit!

Cashmere is eight times warmer than wool, as well as much lighter and softer. The great thing about this is that it also keeps the goats warm! One of the reason we chose cashmere goats for the farm was because they tend to be very winter hardy. We like to keep our animals as naturally as possible, meaning they’re free to come and go from a shed all winter. They’re never locked in, but have free access to a sturdy, wind proof, three sided shelter at all times, making the choice to be in or out themselves. We find this helps them stay super healthy!

At Grimross Farm, we breed our cashmeres for their fibre, for meat and for pets. If you’re interested in owning a cashmere goat, we occasionally have kids for sale in the spring, just drop us an email or call. We would be happy to help you find the right goat for you!
